“Where I’m From”

Filed under: testimonials — admin @ 1:48 pm

Where I’m From”

Where I’m From by Chloë Melling

I am from the old red brick church,

From tights with runs and canvas shoes with holes.

I’m from Ainsleywear bodysuits and rosin on the dented wooden floor,

Only there because of the slippery satin pointe shoes.

I am from the warmth produced by the olive green radiators on the wall.

I’m from fruits, vegetables and a teaspoon of honey.

From the wise Max Ratevosian and beautiful Melania.

I’m from the inside jokes and the hysterical laughter,

The strong bond between kindred spirits,

And from the concentration of the mind.

I am from the black tutu made for the black swan in Swan Lake,

And I’m from the classical music of Chopin.

Constructive criticism and hard work is where I am from,

Along with deep breaths and nature sounds.

I am from a family of beings who truly care,

And from the fancy masquerade ball,

From the touch of the ballet master’s quiet confidence,

And the smiles that make everything alright.

I am from the grainy wooden barre attached to the wall,

For without it, we would not be strong enough to survive a dancer’s world.

From where support before going into auditions is given,

And the courage to face those unnerving judges and endless competitors is found.

I’m from mirrored reflections of the body’s lines,

And fogged windows due to rising temperatures,

From where the dreams of becoming a dancer is possible,

And where bobby-pins are scattered throughout.

I am from the land of ouch pouches, and blister band aids,

From the place where quality of training is valued,

I’m from time commitment and daily classes,

For without them, there is no hope.

I am from the heat of hard workers, dedication and passion,

For without drive, you will go nowhere.

From stain glass windows that make the sun shine right in,

I am from sage green walls, and sore feet.

I am from the place where you must feel the music,

A whole different world where you heart beats faster,

From newly sewn ribbons and dripping sweat,

I am from performances and audiences,

And from practice, work and practice.

I am from love, soul, and the piano,

Which all together form a harmony of movement.

I’m from Paquita, Swan Lake, La SyIphide and Cinderella,

I, Chloë Melling, am from the Hamilton City Ballet.
